Over 350 participants for Al-Quran memorisation contest

The preliminary round of the National Al-Quran Memorisation and its Understanding Competition for 1441 Hijrah/2020 was held at the Meeting Room of the MABIMS Centre for Al-Quran Studies and Dissemination in Jalan Ong Sum Ping yesterday.

The competition is one of the projects by the Ministry of Religious Affairs (MoRA) to enliven major Islamic events and an activity for the National Level Nuzul Al-Quran Celebration held every year.

There were five categories in the preliminary round.

Category ‘A’ was open to participants aged 13 and below, and involved memorising selected chapters from the Al-Quran which included Surah Al-Muthaffiffin, Surah Al-Insyiqaaq, Surah Al-Buruuj, Surah At-Taariq, Surah Al-A’laa, Surah Al-Ghashiyah, Surah Al-Fahr, Surah Al-Balad, Surah Asy-Syams, Surah Al-Lail and compilations of chapters from Surah Ad-Dhuha until Surah An-Nas as well as interpretation of Surah An-Naba, Surah An-Nazi’at, Surah Abasa, Surah At-Takwir and Surah Al-Infitar.

Category ‘B’ was open to participants aged 14 and above. Participants were required to memorise selected chapters such as Surah Al-Kahfi, Surah Luqman, Surah As-Sajdah, Surah Ar-Rahman, Surah Al-Waqi’ah, Surah Al-Mulk, Surah Al-Insaan, Surah Yaasiin, Surah Al-Jin and interpretations of Surah Al-Jumu’ah and Surah An-Nur. The category was not open to students of Institut Tahfiz Al-Quran Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah (ITQSHHB).

Category ‘C’ was open to all ages, and those who had never taken the Brunei Darussalam Tasmie’ Al-Quran Memorisation Allowance Test in Categories 10, 20 and 30 Juzuks. Participants were required to memorise the three Juzuks of Al-Quran from Juzuk 1 to Juzuk 3, as well as the interpretation of Surah An-Nisaa’.

Participants of Category ‘D’ were required to memorise Juzuk 1 to Juzuk 15 of Al-Quran, and also the interpretations of Surah Maryam and Surah Taha. The category was open to participants of all ages who had never taken the Brunei Darussalam Memorisation Al-Quran Tasmie’ Allowance Test in Category 30 Juzuks.

Category ‘E’ was also open to all ages. Participants were required to memorise Juzuk 1 to Juzuk 30 of Al-Quran and the interpretations of Surah Asy-Syura, Surah Az-Zukhruf, Surah Ad-Dukhan and Surah Al-Jathiyah.

This year’s competition saw 141 participants for Category ‘A’, 24 for Category ‘B’, 131 for Category ‘C’, 42 for Category ‘D’ and 14 for Category ‘E’, totalling up to 352 participants.

Twelve participants from each category with scores of 65 per cent and above will advance to the semi-finals. The competition will run for eight days from January 14-27.
