Minister of Education Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Hamzah bin Haji Sulaiman presented the BIBD ALAF Scholarships to the recipients.

Deputy Minister of Education Datin Seri Paduka Dr Hajah Romaizah binti Haji Mohd Salleh as well as permanent secretaries, deputy permanent secretaries, senior officials and personnel from both ministries, BIBD Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Mubashar Khokhar, and senior management and staff from BIBD were also in attendance.

BIBD Deputy Managing Director Hajah Noraini binti Haji Sulaiman in her capacity as the Chairperson of the BIBD ALAF Programme Board of Trustees shared that the programme is a manifestation of BIBD’s belief in the value of life-long learning in line with the objectives of Brunei Vision 2035 to develop into a nation which will be widely recognised for the accomplishments of its well-educated and highly skilled people.

Alhamdulillah, as a result of the close collaboration and cooperation between BIBD, the Ministry of Religious Affairs and the Ministry of Education along with the support of local corporates and the public, the BIBD ALAF programme currently supports 240 students,” added the deputy managing director.

The event coincided with the presentation of Academic Excellence Awards to the ALAF students by the BIBD Managing Director and CEO. Among those awarded were six students who scored 5As in the recent Primary School Assessment (PSR) Examination, two who achieved nine ‘O’ levels during their Brunei-Cambridge GCE ‘O’ Level Examination and two who received excellent results in the Brunei Religious Education Certificate (SPUB). Seven Top Achievers who maintained excellent academic results throughout the year were also among those rewarded during the award ceremony.

The event also witnessed the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the Intervention Learning Fund of the Riayah Wa Mahabbah Programme between the MoE and BIBD which reflects the intention of the government and BIBD in strengthening their cooperation to further the BIBD ALAF programme in achieving its vision “to invest in human resources and capital by providing quality education and fostering future youth leadership”.

Signing on behalf of the Ministry of Education was Permanent Secretary (Core Education) at the MoE Dr Shamsiah Zuraini Kanchanawati binti Haji Tajuddin, while on behalf of BIBD was Deputy Managing Director Hajah Noraini.

Speaking on the ALAF programme, BIBD Chief Marketing Officer Hajah Nurul Akmar binti Haji Mohd Jaafar said it aims to produce students who are educated and well-rounded, focussing on equipping them with relevant skills in line with the needs of the industry. “For example, the ALAF students are exposed to coding, robotics and other ICT skills that are in high demand in the Industrial Revolution 4.0 (IR4.0) era. Similarly, this year, we wanted the students to develop their agricultural skills and introduced an urban farming programme,” said Hajah Nurul Akmar.

“We hope these skills will be an early introduction and catalyst for their entrepreneurial spirits, but ultimately, we hope to create young Bruneians who are capable of steering, developing and contributing to the nation, in line with the objectives of Brunei Vision 2035.”
