More than 40 volunteers gathered at Pekan Kuala Belait yesterday, for the ‘City Clean Up’ campaign which covered a total area of 2km sq.
Held in conjunction with International Volunteer Day 2019 and the ‘Day of Action’, this is the first activity organised by the Minda Youth Movement since its establishment last November, in collaboration with the Belait Youth and Sports Department and Green Depot.
The guest of honour Legislative Council (LegCo) member and Village Head of Kampong Labi 1 Yang Berhormat Hanapi bin Mohd Siput, who joined the clean-up efforts.
In his welcoming speech, Vice President of the Minda Youth Movement Haji Abdul Afiq bin Zainuddin said that the event allowed them to accomplish a Whole-of-Nation approach under the theme ‘Volunteer for an Inclusive Future’.
“Not only is it hoped to continue, but also inspire yet more campaigns and programmes to cover a wider scope, in further encouraging volunteerism in line with Brunei Vision 2035,” he added.
He also outlined six other programmes conducted under the ‘Day of Action’ banner in the Belait District: cleaning activities at mosques, a HIT Carnival, Minda Prihatin Project, a clean-up at Silver Jubilee Park and beach, a Back-to-School charity, and Operasi Selesa.
A short safety briefing was delivered by the campaign’s Project Manager and Chairman Azmi bin Kamaluddin, followed by a talk on the importance of recycling by Fatin Khairunnisa binti Mat Jaafar from Green Depot.
The volunteers were divided into two groups, collecting recyclable items and waste from the streets in the northern and southern areas of Pekan Kuala Belait.
Also present were Permanent Secretary (Administration, Finance and Estate) at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports (MCYS) Pengiran Mohammad Amirrizal bin Pengiran Haji Mahmud and Head of the Belait Youth and Sports Department Mohd Shah Johan bin Haji Shari.
