Three citizen heroes were honoured in a recent ceremony hosted by Operation Branch ‘B’ of the Fire and Rescue Department (FRD) in the Belait District.

Mohamad Rozizam bin Mohd Maslin, Md Shamsulnizam bin Haji Abdul Latif and Mohd Hirman Azri bin Zulkernain each received the Community Responder Award for their prompt action in putting out a storeroom fire at the Pengiran Jaya Negara Pengiran Haji Abu Bakar Secondary School, on December 11.

Mohamad Rozizam, a lab caretaker at the school, together with Md Shamsulnizam and Mohd Hirman Azri, who are both employed at Functional Engineering Company Sdn Bhd, used a carbon dioxide extinguisher to put out the flames caused by an electrical spark from an air-conditioning unit.

The certificates were presented by Commanding Officer of Operation Branch ‘B’ Senior Superintendent Muhd Shahreeni bin Haji Mohd Yussof.

Meanwhile, the FRD is continuing its efforts to emphasise the importance of safety through community programmes such as the Fire Marshal Course and Life Saver 995 briefings.

The public is also reminded to avoid socket overloads and to switch off all unused electrical appliances, as well as ensuring that all wiring is in compliance with building standards. They are also encouraged to keep equipment such as fire extinguishers and blankets within easy reach.

To report fire-related emergencies, contact the FRD hotline at 995.
