A joint collaboration between Brunei Shell Marketing Company Sdn Bhd (BSM), Bank Islam Brunei Darussalam (BIBD) and Progresif Cellular Sdn Bhd has enabled the Roxana Petrol Station in Seria to become the first local filling station to provide cashless payment solutions for customers.

Incorporating BIBD QuickPay and Progresif Pay, the system was launched at the self-service facility yesterday.

Powered by BIBD NEXGEN, the BIBD QuickPay allows customers to make payments by scanning a QR code via the BIBD mobile app on their phones. Progresif Pay users will also use the QR code to make payments at the filling station.

BSM Sales and Marketing Manager Hajah Rozalina binti Haji CA Mohammad said the cashless payment solutions are in line with BSM’s efforts towards digitalisation and its commitment in providing the best service to customers.

“Furthermore, the newly added service will also help create an enhanced next generation customer experience by enabling them to pay with their mobile phones at the counter,” she said.

Following the opening speech, representatives from BSM, BIBD, and Progresif spoke about the implemented systems during a press conference.

One of the concerns raised was the use of mobile phones at the station, to which Hajah Rozalina said that transactions can only be made through the cashier at the Roxana Store, since the use of mobile phones are prohibited near the petrol pumps.

“The customers are required to switch off their vehicle engines and pay in advance, prior to filling their vehicles with fuel,” she said.

BIBD’s Head of Merchant Services Law Siew Vui meanwhile said, “Our latest initiative will provide a lot of convenience to customers, as they do not need to go to ATMs to withdraw cash.

“For businesses, this helps increase efficiency and reduce cash-handling, with our ultimate goal being to promote the idea of cashless payments to Bruneians and support our government’s objective to de-cash the economy and transform Brunei into a Smart Nation.”

He noted that utilising this system will also allow merchants to reduce the workload related to cash acceptance and collection; reduce risks of cash storage at cash registers; reduce storage of coins and small notes at each store; and mitigate risks related to the storage and transportation of the cash to the bank.

Through the cashless payment system, the Roxana Petrol Station has joined the nearly 400 BIBD QuickPay merchants available across the country, serving over 150,000 BIBD mobile banking users.

Meanwhile, BSM, BIBD and Progresif will continue to jointly promote the cashless petrol station project and roll out similar services at all petrol stations across the country.
