Royalty grace Al-Quran reading competition

His Royal Highness Prince Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah ibni His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah, the Crown Prince and Senior Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) opened the 9th Southeast Asian Youth Al-Quran Reading Competition for 1441 Hijrah/2019 at the International Convention Centre last night, where a total of 22 Qaris and Qariahs are contending for the champion title in the male and female categories respectively.

Also in attendance were His Royal Highness Prince ‘Abdul Malik and other members of the royal family.

Six participants from Myanmar, Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand, the Philippines and Malaysia performed their readings of selected verses of Al-Quran last evening, and this will continue again with the rest of the participants tonight, before the results are announced on the final night of the competition tomorrow.

Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports Major General (Rtd) Dato Paduka Seri Awang Haji Aminuddin Ihsan bin Pehin Orang Kaya Saiful Mulok Dato Seri Paduka Haji Abidin in his welcoming speech said the encouraging number of participants in this year’s edition of the biennial competition reflects the high commitment from Southeast Asian nations to support the event and proves that regional relationship can be further strengthened through good deeds and worship. The minister added that the competition is also a valuable platform to enhance the quality of Al-Quran reading for propagating Islamic teachings especially among the youth.

“As the next generation, it is apt to put hopes towards the youth to glorify Al-Quran at all times, thus as the best human capital to contribute to development of countries and the Ummah today and tomorrow,” the minister said.

Incepted in 2000, the competition organised by the Government of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam invites Muslims aged 15-30 from ASEAN member countries and Timor Leste.

This year, Brunei is represented by Qari and also Qariah champions of the National Youth Al-Quran Reading Competition 2019 Abdul Mu’in bin Haji Abdul Hamid and Dayangku Siti Ummi Syazana binti Pengiran Haji Marjuki.

Apart from glorifying Al-Quran, the event aims to inculcate friendship, brotherhood and cooperation among youth of the region; boost the quality of Al-Quran reading from young.

Bruneian Qari and Qariahs Ahmad Zulwaqar bin Suhaili and Dayangku Amal Zahirah binti Pengiran Haji Jofri were winners of the Qari and Qariah categories respectively in the last edition in 2017.
