Several areas in the Belait District – Kampong Merangking Hilir, Kampong Sungai Mau, Jalan Kandul, Jalan Laid Lakang and Kampong Sukang – have been flooded affecting some 17 houses and 79 residents since November 29.

Minister of Home Affairs and Chairman of the National Disaster Management Centre Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Kerna Dato Seri Setia (Dr) Haji Awang Abu Bakar bin Haji Apong visited the affected areas yesterday.

The minister was briefed by Belait District Officer and Chairman of Belait District Disaster Management Centre Ramlee bin Haji Jamudin on the situation and actions taken by agencies in providing assistance.

The Belait District Disaster Management Centre monitored the tide water level each day through the Fire and Rescue Department’s Operation ‘B’ Belait Branch.

The centre also distributed food rations to affected villagers through the Community Development Department and provided transport such as boats to the villagers living near the river.

The Incident Command Post has been activated at the multipurpose hall of Kampong Merangking since December 3. The minister visited some of the flooded areas and handed over food rations to four families at Jalan Kandul and four in Kampong Sungai Mau.

Permanent Secretary (Safety, Welfare and Law) at the Ministry of Home Affairs Mohd Amir Hairil bin Haji Mahmud, Deputy Permanent Secretary (Municipal and District) at the Ministry of Home Affairs Abdul Walid bin Haji Matassan and senior officials were present.
