Brunei Darussalam’s lawn bowl and pencak silat athletes arrived in the country to a warm welcome after competing in the 30th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in Manila, the Philippines.
The contingents were welcomed at the Brunei International Airport by Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports Major General (Rtd) Dato Paduka Seri Awang Haji Aminuddin Ihsan bin Pehin Orang Kaya Saiful Mulok Dato Seri Paduka Haji Abidin.
The lawn bowls team amassed two silver medals through the women’s pairs event and men’s fours.
Esmawandy Brahim and Hajah Amaliah binti Haji Metali bagged silver in the women’s pairs after losing to Malaysia 14-21. In the men’s fours, Brunei quartet of Bahren bin Abdul Rahman, Mohd Hazmi bin Haji Aziz, Haji Osman bin Haji Yahya and Haji Amli bin Haji Gafar also lost to Malaysia 6-24 in the final.
In pencak silat, Anisah Najihah won bronze in the women’s seni tunggal event after finishing with 451 points.
“We are proud of your achievements of obtaining medals for the country. Lawn bowling managed to capture two silvers and pencak silat obtained one bronze. For athletes who didn’t achieve any medals, we know that you have done your very best to compete. Continue to train hard for the country. We are proud of all of you,” the minister told the athletes.
The minister also highlighted that better preparations will be held for the next edition of the Games and for other regional meets. “Next up is preparation for the Sukma (Sukan Malaysia), and for the next SEA Games, we will carry out preparation earlier.”
Also present to welcome the athletes were Permanent Secretary (Administration, Finance and Estate) at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports (MCYS) Pengiran Mohammad Amirrizal bin Pengiran Haji Mahmud; Deputy Permanent Secretary (Youth and Sports) at the MCYS Colonel (Rtd) Pengiran Haji Maiddin bin Pengiran Haji Said; Acting Director of Youth and Sports Development Zainab binti Haji Morshidi; and Acting Director of Youth and Sports Pengiran Haji Mohd Azlan bin Pengiran Haji Tengah Omar.
