The Brunei Government this year spent BND2.7 million to ensure capacity building of youth is undertaken, through various international programmes, youth organisation programmes and the National Service Programme (PKBN).
Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports Major General (Rtd) Dato Paduka Seri Awang Haji Aminuddin Ihsan bin Pehin Orang Kaya Saiful Mulok Dato Seri Paduka Haji Abidin made these remarks at the closing ceremony of the International Exploration Camp.
The money spent “cannot be compared to the return of investment of being able to develop the capacity of youth, who are intangible assets… and are much bigger than the BND2.7 million spent,” he said.
The minister added, “We want to empower youth and have them achieve beyond expectation. More importantly, how can we turn empowerment into action? This programme provides the platform for youth empowerment to give ideas.
“Young people are excited about climate change and sustainable development goals. We empower youth through programmes to give ideas, think outside the box so that ideas can be transformed into action. We are as one together, we cannot be on our own, we need to work together to turn ideas into action,” he said. The three-day programme at the Sports Village of the Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports Complex in Berakas saw 91 participants, most of them students.
The programme aimed to foster closer ties and expose participants to international programmes organised by the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports.
Chairperson of the International Programme Alumni and International Exploration Camp Haji Mohamad Paizzal bin Haji Piluk also attended.
Over the three days, participants took part in a treasure hunt, talent show, turning trash into treasure activity, origami- and temaki-sushi making, discussions, a visit to the Marine and Biodiversity Centre, and a cleaning campaign at Meragang Beach in support of the Day of Action initiative.
The minister also presented certificates to programme participants and sponsors.
