Brunei LNG Sdn Bhd has successfully delivered a total of 267 million tonnes of liquefied natural gas (LNG), since it began operations 50 years ago in 1969.
Today, 90 per cent of the volume produced by Brunei LNG has been delivered to Japan, which remains Brunei’s largest client.
This was highlighted in a sabda delivered by His Royal Highness Prince Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah ibni His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah, the Crown Prince and Senior Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office in his capacity as Chairman of Brunei LNG Board of Directors, during a luncheon at The Empire Brunei yesterday to mark the 50th anniversary of Brunei LNG.
His Royal Highness also expressed his appreciation to the consortium of important Japanese buyers – JERA, Tokyo Gas and Osaka Gas – as well as recent clients from Shell LNG, Petronas LNG and Koch Supply and Trading SARL.
His Royal Highness noted that the anniversary was another important milestone for the Sultanate, as it displays the steady developments in the country’s natural gas industry despite the ever-changing global and regional economic landscape of new challenges and risks.
“Indeed, the achievements over this half a century have demonstrated the resilience of the country’s natural gas industry, and Brunei LNG’s strong commitment and determination in contributing towards Brunei Darussalam’s economic and national development,” said His Royal Highness.
His Royal Highness also lauded Brunei LNG’s ‘Bruneianisation Programme’.
The programme resulted in 93 per cent of its current workforce being comprised of local talents.
After delivering the sabda, His Royal Highness consented to receive two pesambah – Brunei LNG’s 50th anniversary coffee-table book and a model of Brunei LNG’s liquefaction train – presented by Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Brunei LNG Patrice Girard.
The coffee-table book, titled Brunei LNG: Celebrating a 50-Year Journey, tells the story of the first ever liquefied natural gas project in the Western Pacific, from its humble beginnings in 1969 to one of the key contributors in the development of Brunei Darussalam and its economy.
It is the first publication to narrate the establishment and growth of Brunei LNG over the past five decades, and was recently launched at Brunei LNG’s 50th Anniversary Staff and Reunion Gala Night.
Earlier, Girard said in his welcoming speech, “With the ongoing support of our shareholders and of all stakeholders, we are confident we will continue to safely deliver LNG to our customers for the next decades, and thus continue to contribute to the economy and development of the nation.”
On hand to welcome His Royal Highness were Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office and Minister of Finance and Economy II Dato Seri Setia Dr Awang Haji Mohd Amin Liew bin Abdullah and Minister of Energy Dato Seri Setia Dr Awang Haji Mat Suny bin Haji Mohd Hussein, alongside members of the Brunei LNG Leadership Team and members of the Brunei LNG Board of Directors.
During the event, guests witnessed martial arts displays by the International Association Silat Suffian Bela Diri, and cultural dances by the Belait and Iban ethnic groups from the Belait District.
Before leaving the venue, His Royal Highness also met with LNG buyers from Japan, including JERA, Osaka Gas and Tokyo Gas, followed by buyers from SLMT, Koch and PLL.
The event concluded with a photo session with members of the Brunei LNG Board of Directors, members of the Brunei LNG Leadership Team and specially invited guests, including LNG buyers.
