I am writing with regard to the Technical and Vocational Education Scholarship Scheme (BPTV).
I am a student enrolled at Micronet International College (Jerudong Campus) under the BPTV scheme. BPTV is a scholarship scheme funded under Dana Sumber Manusia, Government of Brunei Darussalam for those who want to further their education at private institutions.
One of its main objectives is to provide financial assistance for eligible students who are not able to study at government institutions and are unable to afford to enrol at private institutions.
To be eligible for a BPTV Scholarship, applicants must be unemployed; which means those who were working were forced to quit their jobs to accept the scholarship. This is very frustrating as it is hard to find a career nowadays especially with unemployment on the rise.
I also find it ridiculous as the monthly government allowance provided was only BND45, which is not sustainable and not enough as we have to pay for food and fuel.
I am pleading to the Government of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam and the authorities to look into this matter and consider raising the allowance to BND200 to BND300 or equal to those studying in higher local institutions.
They should also allow students to work to gain a side income while studying.
