Body of Kuala Dungun missing fisherman found

KUALA TERENGGANU (Bernama) – The remains of a fisherman, who went missing after his wooden boat sank, have been found five kilometres from Kuala Dungun Fire and Rescue operations centre at 10.20am yesterday.

Terengganu Fire and Rescue Department operation head Mohd Mazimi Mohamad said the victim’s body was found by marine police and was taken to Dungun Hospital for further action.

“The search and rescue operation (SAR) this morning began at 6.45am involving 60 rescue personnel from various agencies,” he said. In the 7.30am incident last Saturday, the victim, Afandi Zakaria, 42, with two friends, had gone to sea to fish when their boat was hit by waves and sank near the estuary of Sungai Dungun.

His friends, Mohd Fadhil Jusoh, 39, and Mohamad Ekhsan Kamaruddin, 32, managed to swim ashore clinging to a fuel tank but Afandi was nowhere to be found.

Meanwhile, Afandi’s wife, Noor Azura Abdul Aziz, 38, said she accepted the passing of her husband and was relieved that his body was found. “I thank the rescue team who worked hard to find my husband since yesterday,” she said.

The couple has three children – Siti Nor Fazlieyanie, 14; Siti Nor Fazlieyana, four; and Afazliey, two.
