Bicycle thief behind bars for 16 months

A 41-year-old local man who pleaded guilty to stealing a track bicycle parked behind a restaurant in Kampong Kiulap was sentenced to 16 months in prison by the Magistrate’s Court yesterday.

The court, presided over by Magistrate Hajah Ervy Sufitriana binti Haji Abdul Rahman heard that the defendant, Shahroon bin Haji Sulaiman at about 2.25pm on September 4, 2019 was collecting discarded cans to be sold when he saw the track bicycle parked nearby a staircase behind the restaurant. He left the vicinity with the bicycle, went to his house in Kampong Peramu to take a chain and locked the bicycle outside the vicinity of Duli Pengiran Muda Mahkota Pengiran Muda Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah Mosque in Kampong Tamoi.

A police report was filed by a cook working at the restaurant who said he left the bicycle loaned from his friend for only five minutes. The defendant was consequently arrested on December 2, and the bicycle was found chained along the walkway of Kampong Tamoi.

Court records showed that the defendant has various theft convictions between 1994 and 2018. Deputy Public Prosecutor Raihan Nabilah binti Haji Ahmad Ghazali appeared on behalf of the prosecution in the case.
