NFABD gets new President

Pengiran Haji Matusin bin Pengiran Haji Matasan has been elected as the President of the National Football Association of Brunei Darussalam (NFABD) for 2019-2023 during the 4th NFABD Congress at NFABD House Berakas yesterday.

Haji Abdul Razak bin Haji Ibrahim, Bujang bin Haji Japar, Abdul Adib bin Haji Abdul Khani and Pengiran Haji Aliudin bin Pengiran Haji Tajudin were also elected as executive members.

During the congress, His Royal Highness Prince Haji Sufri Bolkiah in a sabda highlighted His Royal Highness was elected as a member of the organising committee for FIFA competitions, member to the Asian Football Confederation’s (AFC) Social Responsibility Committee and Deputy President of AFF for 2019-2023 as well as Deputy Chairman of ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) Financial Committee and Emergency Committee. These will have a positive impact to Brunei’s football by having a voice in decision making at international assembly.

His Royal Highness said, “NFABD achieved yet another milestone by receiving a visit from President of FIFA Gianni Infantino. This is part of the effort of NFABD to foster closer ties with FIFA.”

Since 2013, a number of Memorandum of Understanding (MoUs) were signed like cooperation with the Japanese Football Association, DST Communications Sdn Bhd, Sports School, Brunei Halal, You-C 1000, Chinese Football Association, Royal Brunei Airlines (RB) and Politeknik Brunei. NFABD also successfully hosted the international football competition with cooperation of the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports (MCYS) through Hassanal Bolkiah Trophy 2018, AFF Suzuki Cup Qualifier 2018 and World Cup Qualifier 2019.

His Royal Highness conveyed his gratitude to the Government of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam through MCYS as well as the Ministry of Education (MoE) on the cooperation given to NFABD.

Pengiran Haji Matusin who is former secretary general of the Football Association of Brunei Darussalam (BAFA) said, “I would like to congratulate His Royal Highness for bringing NFABD to the world stage, especially with the appointments and accolades bestowed on His Royal Highness showing the recognition of FIFA and AFF. “

On the election, he said. “I want to thank my supporters in the clubs and association for nominating me to the post. I realise the challenge ahead is enormous especially to emulate His Royal Highness’ achievements. I will work hard so that they won’t be disappointed.

“I would like to see greater interaction between members and the association, the development of football nationwide not just at club level but also at international level. We should look back to the years when football was very popular in schools and villages. We need to bring it back. If we look at the successful football countries, football is everywhere in the streets and fields. We need to get the youth and children to love football again.”

Representative from FIFA Sanjeevan Balasingam; representatives from AFC Sandjar Ridzaev and Nhodkeo Phawadee; and representative from AFF Toh Sen Nee were present to observe the congress.
