2nd National Malay Oratory Competition final on November 16

The final of the 2nd National Malay Oratory Competition themed Beraja Asas Perpaduan will take place on November 16 aiming to instil patriotism, strengthen communication skills using the standard Malay Language and generate positive competitiveness.

This was announced by Chairman of the Brunei Darussalam Hokkien Association Lim Han Chiong at a press conference at the association’s office in Kiulap yesterday.

Assistant Secretary of the Brunei History Association (PESEBAR) Dr Muhammad Hadi bin Muhammad Melayong as a representative of PESEBAR president, Gary Liaw and senior members of the Hokkien Association were present.

Lim noted that the competition is organised in collaboration with PESEBAR, Radio Television Brunei and Chung Hwa Middle School Bandar Seri Begawan. The competition has helped children of the Tiong Hua community to improve their Malay Language skills.

Meanwhile, Gary Liaw said that the competition this year is also open to Chinese students studying at mission schools in  the country.

The competition started with the preliminary round with 40 contestants. Only 15 made it to the final round for students of Years 4-6 ( Category ‘A’), Years 7-10 ( Category ‘B’) and registered  members of the Tiong Hua Association in the country (Category ‘D’).

There is no contestant in the open category, which are for the Tiong Hua community holding the yellow identity card. The other categories will see five contestants each.

Judges for the final round will be representatives appointed from the Information Department, Prime Minister’s Office; Ministry of Education; and Language and Literature Bureau, Ministry of Culture Youth and Sports.

Contestants will be judged on the accuracy of information relevant to the theme, clarity of structure and pronunciation, effectiveness on style of language delivered as well as presentation and performance.

The winner of Category ‘A’ will walk away with a BND300 cash prize; second place with BND200; and third place BND100. In Category ‘B’, the first place winner will receive a BND600 cash prize; second place BND400; and third place BND200.

In Category ‘D’, the first place winner will be awarded with a BND1,000 cash prize; second place winner, BND700; and third place winner BND400.
