A local man found himself in court for filing a false police report about his mother’s stolen car. Magistrate Pengiran Hazirah binti Pengiran Haji Mohd Yusof ordered Jeffrey anak Jefit @ Lai Suan Wei, 22, to settle a BND800 fine or serve a month’s imprisonment in default of payment.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Hajah Siti Mu’izzah binti Haji Sabli’s facts of the case stated that at 7pm on October 25, the defendant had borrowed his mother’s car to commute to a friend’s house in Kuala Balai, Belait District.

While he was there, three persons showed up and asked him to settle his debts with them.

The defendant eventually agreed to give his mother’s car to them as collateral, until he could settle his debts.

Later, the defendant went to the Kuala Belait Police Station and filed a report, claiming that the car had been driven away by the three persons.

The three were consequently arrested, which caused them some inconvenience, as well as being subjected to exhaustive investigations by the police.

Further investigations led to the discovery that the defendant had invented the story and filed a false report, out of fear that his mother would get angry with him for giving away the car as collateral to the three persons.
