A total of 259 graduates received certificates from His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, the Chancellor of Religious Teachers University College of Seri Begawan’s (KUPU SB) during the KUPU SB 9th Convocation Ceremony at the International Convention Centre in Berakas yesterday.
Upon arrival, His Majesty was greeted by Minister of Religious Affairs Pehin Udana Khatib Dato Paduka Seri Setia Ustaz Haji Awang Badaruddin bin Pengarah Dato Paduka Haji Awang Othman, State Mufti Pehin Datu Seri Maharaja Dato Paduka Seri Setia (Dr) Ustaz Haji Awang Abdul Aziz bin Juned, Chief Syar’ie Judge Pehin Orang Kaya Paduka Seri Utama Dato Paduka Seri Setia Ustaz Haji Awang Salim bin Haji Besar and Ra’es of KUPU SB Dr Haji Adanan bin Haji Basar.
The 9th Convocation Ceremony commenced with the recitation of Surah Al-Fatihah by the State Mufti, followed by the reading of Surah Hud by graduates, and continued with a welcoming remark by Ra’es of KUPU SB Dr Haji Adanan, who highlighted several development programmes carried out since last year’s convocation.
“KUPU SB in its Strategic Plan 2019-2024 will strive to create digital learning resources of Islamic religious knowledge, pedagogy courses and compulsory university courses in multimedia form that is more convenient, fast, friendly, interactive, interesting and effective,” he said.
The Ra’es of KUPU SB also explained that the material will be used as teaching and learning resources in KUPU SB and will be shared with religious schools and teachers.
“In the Strategic Plan, KUPU SB is also designing systematic programmes for the development of human capital or students as well as staff development so that they develop holistically based on their competency,” he said.
He also said the graduates of Higher National Diploma (HND) of Religious Teaching in Curriculum were the first batch which began in 2016.
“They are given the opportunity to upgrade their experience to Bachelor’s Degree level by adjusting the credit hours for the course they underwent according to their performance.” He explained that students undertaking their Degree in Religious Teaching intake 2016 has also been undergoing minor programmes according to their interests and fields.
Highlighting student personality (sahsiah) development, he underlined that KUPU SB continues to strive in strengthening its co-curriculum activity either in core religious teaching skills, self potential development, intellectual, life skills, Malay Islamic Monarchy (MIB) Leadership, physical health, community work and participation in major Islamic events in the country.
“In the aspect of community work, KUPU SB continues its efforts in providing academic, leadership, welfare or material assistance in and outside the country during humanitarian missions,” the Ra’es of KUPU SB said.
In shaping youth with MIB leadership, he explained that KUPU SB is always open to work with ministries, associations, NGOs and other stakeholders. He said as a teaching university, KUPU SB will continue to conduct intellectual activity through non-formal education such as seminars, forums, halaqah, wacana and talks, and Islamic education will also be channelled through entrepreneurs activities, leisure, health, culture and arts.
The ceremony continued with a titah delivered by His Majesty, who then presented certificates to the PhD, Master’s Degree, Bachelor’s Degree, Post-graduate Diploma, Higher National Diploma and Diploma graduates.
Before departing the ceremony, His Majesty consented to take photos with the new graduates and their family members.
This year’s Convocation Ceremony featured one PhD graduate in Islamic Education, six Master’s degree holders, 51 Post-graduate Diploma holders, 96 Bachelor’s Degree holders, 101 HND graduates and four Diploma recipients.
