Filipino gets jail, whippings for overstaying

The Magistrate’s Court yesterday sentenced a Filipino to six months’ imprisonment with three whippings for overstaying.

Cornado Cenas Suya, 45, was arrested on October 24, 2019 morning by Immigration Enforcement officers during an operation at a workshop in STKRJ Kampong Rimba.

The defendant failed to produce travel or work documents and claimed that he lost his passport.

Investigations revealed that the defendant was first given a visit pass when he entered Brunei at the Labu Control Post on June 23, 2016. The defendant last sought for extension of his visit pass on July 25, 2016 which was valid until August that year and overstayed for 1,155 days since its expiry.

Magistrate Mohammad Marzuqi bin Sabtu presided over the case. Immigration prosecutor Pengiran Norarffin bin Pengiran Haji Hashim represented the Public Prosecutor.
