Eight slapped with fine for gambling

The Magistrate’s Court yesterday handed fines to nine men of different nationalities for hosting, assisting, playing and attempting to gamble in a house.

Bruneian Sofian bin Abdullah, 35, hosted the game at his place in Kampong Bunut, Jalan Tutong before midnight on October 24, 2019 and was handed a fine of BND5,000 or five months’ jail in default.

Indonesian Imam Badrowi,40, assisted in hosting the game and also overstayed in the country.

He was fined BND5,000 or five months’ jail in default for the first offence and three months’ jail with three whippings for overstaying.

Indonesian Abdul Yusen bin Diswanto, 24, was handed a BND500 fine or two weeks’ jail in default for attempting to play the game.

The court handed a BND1,000 fine or a month’s jail in default to 48-year-old Filipino Mohammad Diony bin Abdullah @ Dionisio O Campo, 51-year-old Indonesian Sapuan bin Sakiran, 46-year-old Bangladeshi Washim Akram, 39-year-old Indonesian Marito, and 44-year-old Indonesian Eko Kuswoyo bin Samsi for playing the Katam-Katam game.

DPP Dr Hussin Ali Idris informed Acting Senior Magistrate Pengiran Shahyzul bin Pengiran Abdul Rahman that the police raided the site on a tip-off and found the defendants inside the house.
