DPMM FC moved to the top of Group ‘B’ in the Singapore Cup after they edged Hougang United 1-0 at the Jalan Besar Stadium in Singapore last night.

DPMM FC forward Andrei Varankou’s goal in the 80th minute proved the difference and his side preserved their unbeaten record with four points.

In the game’s early stages, Hendra Azam delivered a corner and Charlie Clough headed the ball into the Hougang United goalkeeper. The midfielder swung in another good delivery from a free-kick which was met by Varankou, but his header flew wide.

Hougang forward Shahfiq Ghani managed to find space and unleashed a decent effort, but DPMM FC goalkeeper Wardun Yussof was equal to the task.

DPMM FC substitute Razimie Ramlli pulled his shot wide after his teammate flicked a header into the opposition box.

Razimie broke the offside trap and unleashed a low effort but Hougang goalkeeper Khairulhin Khalid managed to get a hand on it.

However, Varankou struck home the rebound with 10 minutes of the clock remaining, continuing his rich vein of form.

The Gegar Gegar men endured tense moments deep into injury time after Shahfiq struck a decent free-kick which was spilled by Wardun.

Fortunately, he found cover in the form of his defence who cleared the ball away.

The Brunei-based outfit need just a point in their final group game against reigning holders Albirex Niigata (S) to seal qualification to the knock-out stages.
