Assisting the public to make a ‘healthy’ choice

The Healthy Supermarket Programme is one action plan under the Multi-sectoral Task Force on Health in the field work of cross functional team improving Brunei’s food environment.

The programme is part of the Healthy Choices Initiative in promoting a healthy diet practice in the country. The initiative comprises a Healthy Choice Logo as its main component and is supported by the Healthy Supermarket Programme and Healthy Restaurant Programme.

This was explained by Head of the Health Promotion Centre (HPC) Dr Hajah Norhayati binti Haji Md Kassim as a personal representative of Deputy Permanent Secretary (Professional) at the Ministry of Health Dr Haji Zulaidi bin Haji Abdul Latif.

She shared that the Healthy Supermarket Programme aims to empower the community to make the correct decision through knowledge and understanding on healthy food and beverages available in the supermarket; stimulate healthy changes in the supermarket where the public could have a variety of healthy choices; provide an opportunity for supermarket managers and suppliers in playing the same role in preventing and controlling non-communicable diseases (NCDs) and promoting healthy food and beverages.

Cooperation from stakeholders including supermarkets will provide a strategic platform and encourage healthy food choices, she said. For the 13th Healthy Supermarket Programme, Leong Wui Department Store has shelves labelled ‘Healthy Choice’ encouraging customers to choose healthier food.

‘’The programme enhances public knowledge and encourages them to make a healthier choice while also hoping it could change the public mindset and behaviour to continuously practise healthy living,” Dr Hajah Norhayati said.
