Religious Teachers University College of Seri Begawan (KUPU SB) in collaboration with Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) will organise the 6th University-Community Engagement Conference (UCEC) 2019 at the Serambi Suluh Hall, Tarindak D’Seni in Bandar Seri Begawan on November 4-5.
This was announced during a press conference led by Acting Deputy Ra’es of KUPU SB and Deputy Chairman of the 6th UCEC Dr Abang Haji Hadzmin bin Abang Haji Taha yesterday.
Dean of Students of KUPU SB and Head of Secretariat of the 6th UCEC Haji Mohd Syahiran bin Haji Sofian were also present.
The 6th UCEC is an activity of the Asia-Pacific University-Community Engagement Network (APUCEN), where KUPU SB has been an active member since 2014.
Themed ‘Navigating Community Engagement: Charting the course for 21st Century’, the conference is divided into several sub-themes – Conceptual Overview of University-Community Engagement Practices; Re-conceptualising the Methods in Promoting University-Community Engagement; Re-assessing the Strengths and Weaknesses of University-Community Engagement; Strategic Design to Boost Innovative University-Community Engagement; Social Entrepreneurship as the New Community-University Engagement; Educational Institutional Community Partnership; Internship Programmes and Experiences; and Education and Sustainable Development.
A total of 66 work papers including two main papers, 58 work papers and six posters will be presented during the two-day conference.
The first keynote address will be presented by Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports Major General (Rtd) Dato Paduka Seri Awang Haji Aminuddin Ihsan bin Pehin Orang Kaya Saiful Mulok Dato Seri Paduka Haji Abidin.
The second keynote address will be presented by President of the Academy of Sciences Malaysia Professor Datuk Dr Asma binti Ismail.
Several issues, analyses of engagement policies and strategies covering areas of sustainability, society, economy, education, health, heritage and culture will be explored during the conference sessions.
Delegates will also be able to evaluate and learn about the latest change management approaches such as new techniques to improve production capacity, competitiveness, viability, total production quality and decision-making capabilities based on existing resources.
It was shared that it is hoped to be able to formulate strategic steps for the strengthening of implementation of university-community engagement.
The conference aims to provide a comprehensive exposition of the cultural background and community values of people of Asia that are fundamental for the economic development of a nation.
Discussion topics include: ‘Establishing baseline data on cerebral palsy children in Malaysia through Community Engagement’, ‘Green technology of Automatic Backwash Sand Filtering for Hill water retention pool for the use of villagers’, ‘Enhancing writing skills through social media marketing for a blindness awareness project’, ‘Community engagement nourishing students and faculty staff members towards research and kindness mindset’, ‘Community-based breast cancer learning support through training the trainers’ as well as the importance of mastering employability skills in improving the quality of graduates from institutes of higher education in Brunei Darussalam, and many more.
The conference is expected to be attended by some 350 participants from Brunei, Australia, Cambodia, Indonesia, the Philippines, Japan, Germany, Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam.
