Petronas through its subsidiary, PETRONAS Carigali Brunei Ltd (PCBL), collaborated with the Forestry Department at the Ministry of Primary Resources and Tourism (MPRT) and Green Brunei to mark PCBL’s Environmental Day on September 17 with a tree-planting activity.

Permanent Secretary at the MPRT Pengiran Haji Kamalrudzaman bin Pengiran Haji Mohd Ishak was the guest of honour.

Also present were Legislative Council (LegCo) member and co-founder and Community Engagement Director of Green Brunei Yang Berhormat Khairunnisa binti Haji Ash’ari, Head of International and Regional Relations Unit at the Forestry Department Joffre bin Haji Ali, and officers from the Brunei Climate Change Secretariat, the Ministry of Energy, Manpower and Industry (MEMI) and the MPRT.

Green Brunei is a non-profit organisation that promotes environmental education and creates awareness on environmental conservation and clean technology.

Under the theme ‘Trees for the Future’, 1,000 saplings were planted at the Berakas Forest Reserve Recreational Park by 250 participants comprising Year 9 students from the International School Brunei (ISB) as well as students and lecturers from Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD).

Five tree species – Kapur Paji, Sarang Punai, Sarang Punai Bukit, Selangan Daun Tebal and Kapur Bukit – were planted on a hillside, covering approximately one hectare of land.

Petronas’ Country Head of Brunei Mohamad Othman in his speech said, “In line with our corporate social responsibility (CSR) commitments, Petronas carries out environmental activities on a yearly basis, to show our strong commitment in conserving and protecting the environment and at the same time, raising environmental awareness among the public in Brunei. We hope this event will inspire more youth to participate in future environmental activities organised by Petronas, or by other institutions.”

PCBL was established in 2011 to carry out exploration-related activities in Brunei’s deep-water blocks through its Production Sharing Agreements with Brunei National Petroleum Company (PetroleumBRUNEI).
