The Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports (MCYS) with the cooperation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) organised several sporting activities and games at the Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports Complex yesterday, as part of Brunei Darussalam’s commitment to observe ASEAN Sports Day.

The events began with Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports Major General (Rtd) Dato Paduka Seri Awang Haji Aminuddin Ihsan bin Pehin Orang Kaya Saiful Mulok Dato Seri Paduka Haji Abidin taking part in a 3km fun walkathon alongside a 3km fun cycling event.

Joining the minister were members of the diplomatic corps from ASEAN member states (AMS), Permanent Secretary (Administration, Finance and Estate) at the MCYS Pengiran Mohammad Amirrizal bin Pengiran Haji Mahmud; Permanent Secretary at the MFA Hajah Siti Norishan binti Haji Abdul Ghafor; deputy permanent secretaries and officials from the MFA; and members of the ASEAN community.

The minister also took part in several traditional games from across the region such as Patintero from the Philippines, Sepak Takraw from Thailand, Chapteh or Sepak Bulu Ayam from Singapore, and Batu Seremban from Malaysia.

Later, the minister led a team from the MCYS to victory in the futsal and netball matches. The AMS Mission 2 took second place in the futsal match, while the MFA came in third. In netball, the MFA and the AMS Mission 1 were placed second and third, respectively.

During the Senior Official Meeting on Sports (SOMS) held in Myanmar in November 2018, it was decided that sporting events would be held as part of the ASEAN Day celebration on August 8.

It is hoped that these programmes and activities will forge closer ties, as well as instilling unity, understanding and further cooperation among ASEAN communities.
