The participation of senior citizens in various activities will have additional benefits while also keeping them healthy, Deputy Permanent Secretary (Professional) at the Ministry of Health Dr Haji Zulaidi bin Haji Abdul Latif said.

Speaking on the sidelines of the launching ceremony of a health programme for Belait District’s senior citizens, he noted the importance of “healthy ageing.”

“Such a programme aims to help fulfil that notion while tackling challenges faced by the elderly, especially those related to health and care of senior citizens,” Dr Haji Zulaidi said.

“As a person starts to grow older it does not mean that he or she should not be healthy. This is the stage where we are vulnerable to health issues. Programmes like this provide opportunities and inspires and encourages senior citizens to not only help raise awareness but also to attend to activities conducted by groups and associations such as the PMB at Kampong Pandan,” he said.

The Ministry of Health in collaboration with the Kampong Pandan Bestari Community Centre (PMB), Kuala Belait conducted the senior citizens health programme launching ceremony in the Belait District to provide a platform for opportunities for Belait’s elderly.

Dr Haji Zulaidi addressing the gathering highlighted about the various components that will be conducted under the health programme.

This includes educational sessions to raise awareness on healthy eating, dementia, oral and mental care, physical activities and dialogue sessions for the senior citizens. These will be conducted during the course of the year until 2020, he said.

“I hope the programme will help strengthen health literacy of senior citizens, which in turn will help further support and develop the community; improving the quality of life of all,” Dr Haji Zulaidi said.

The event was held at Kampong Pandan DBP (Language and Literature Bureau) Library, Kuala Belait last week.

Dr Haji Zulaidi was welcomed to the venue by Kampong Pandan Bestari Community Centre Chairman K Salim bin Abdul Karim (Salimo).

Health Promotion Centre Acting Head Dr Hajah Norol Ehsan binti Haji Abdul Hamid and Kampong Pandan PMB and Kampong Pandan DBP Library members also participated.

Dr Haji Zulaidi sounded the gong to officiate the programme’s launch.

This was followed by a tour of the exhibits at the library to learn more about the activities conducted by Kampong Pandan PMB members.
