Para badminton athlete sets off for Thailand championship

After months of training under Coach Mohamad Zuno Kartono bin Haji Ali and former Olympian Jasper Yu, Md Najwan bin Haji Umar Ali is ready and set to compete in the Thailand Para Badminton International Championship 2019 in Bangkok, Thailand from September 16-21.

Md Najwan will be the first para badminton athlete to represent Brunei Darussalam in the competition that will attract the best para badminton athletes from over 20 countries looking to qualifying for the Tokyo Para Olympics 2020.

Both Coach Mohamad Zuno Kartono and Md Najwan left the country yesterday for Thailand to participate in a three-day training camp by Badminton Asia for countries that are developing the game of badminton. Mohamad Zuno Kartono said, “Among the objective is to provide an opportunity for Brunei’s para athletes to compete in overseas event and this is the first time a Brunei para athlete will compete in badminton.

“Md Najwan is a capable badminton player; he with his doubles partner won second place at the national junior badminton championships two years ago, playing against ordinary players.”

Md Najwan said, “I felt honoured to represent Brunei Darussalam in the competition. I hope to gain much needed competition experience and do my best to bring glory to the country.”

Present at the airport on behalf of Sunrise Yonex Singapore was Deputy President of the Brunei Badminton Association Abdul Gapar bin Obey, who handed over the sponsorship of badminton equipment to Md Najwan.
