The Ministry of Defence (MinDef) signed two Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) concerning Collaboration in Research, Innovation and Technology yesterday afternoon at the Officers’ Mess, Bolkiah Garrison with Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) and Universiti Teknologi Brunei (UTB) respectively.
The MoUs were signed by the Permanent Secretary at the MinDef Brigadier General (Rtd) Dato Seri Pahlawan Shahril Anwar bin Haji Ma’awiah. Signing on behalf of UBD and UTB were Vice-Chancellor of UBD Datin Dr Hajah Anita Binurul Zahrina binti Pehin Orang Kaya Laila Wijaya Dato Seri Setia Haji Awang Abdul Aziz and Acting Vice-Chancellor of UTB Haji Ady Syarmin bin Haji Md Taib.
The signing ceremony were witnessed by Minister of Defence II Pehin Datu Lailaraja Major General (Rtd) Dato Paduka Seri Haji Awang Halbi bin Haji Mohd Yussof and Minister of Education Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Hamzah bin Haji Sulaiman. Also present were other members of the Defence Executive Committee as well as Permanent Secretary (Higher Education) at the Ministry of Education (MoE) Dr Haji Azman bin Ahmad and Deputy Permanent Secretary (Higher Education) at the MoE Dr Chin Wei Keh. Other senior officers from MinDef, MoE, UBD and UTB also attended the signing ceremony.
The objective of the MoUs is to promote research and innovation, capacity building and closer partnerships, in defence capabilities and technology, between MinDef and the two local institutes of higher learnings, through the formation of a Defence Research and Technology Community. The MoUs create opportunities for MinDef to work collaboratively with an extended network of local experts, and for the development of a critical pool of defence technologists and scientists to serve the nation’s needs.
