Minister of Development Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Suhaimi bin Haji Gafar received the Distinguished Honorary Fellow Award at the 37th Conference of the ASEAN Federation of Engineering Organisations (CAFEO37) in Jakarta yesterday.
The Distinguished Honorary Fellow Award is conferred by the Chairman of the ASEAN Federation of Engineering Organisations (AFEO) to outstanding professional engineers with distinguished and outstanding contributions to nation-building and engineering institutions in ASEAN.
Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Suhaimi is the only awardee from Brunei Darussalam.
AFEO comprises 10 non-governmental engineering institutions and organisations from ASEAN member countries, with Brunei Darussalam being represented by the Brunei Institution of Surveyors, Engineers and Architects (PUJA Brunei) since 1984.
The main objectives of AFEO is to promote goodwill and mutual understanding between ASEAN engineering institutes, in addition to establishing ASEAN baseline standards for the engineering profession and the best practices towards facilitating the mobility of engineers within the ASEAN member countries.
The 37th CAFEO was officially launched in Jakarta yesterday by President of the Republic of Indonesia Joko Widodo, with several ASEAN ministers in attendance.
Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Suhaimi was invited by the President of the Engineering Institute of Indonesia (PII), to attend both the opening ceremony and the conference.
The yearly conference, organised by member institutes of AFEO, has an important role in helping to increase the profile of the engineering sector and showcase its importance to the development and dynamism of the region.
After the award presentation ceremony, Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Suhaimi joined other ASEAN ministers led by the President of PII on a tour of the Indonesia Engineering Exhibition, which was a showcase of Indonesia’s latest engineering marvels ranging from infrastructure to digital solutions and renewable energy.
Also present at the 37th CAFEO opening ceremony was Legislative Council member Yang Berhormat Siti Rozaimeriyanty binti Dato Seri Laila Jasa Haji Abdul Rahman, who is also the President of PUJA Brunei.
Acting Director-General of Public Works Lim Sui Kau Alice, as well as several senior officials from the Ministry of Development were among the Brunei delegation.
