His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam graced the 29th Teacher’s Day celebration at the International Convention Centre (ICC) in Berakas yesterday.
Accompanying His Majesty were His Royal Highness Prince Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah, the Crown Prince and Senior Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office; His Royal Highness Prince ‘Abdul Malik; His Royal Highness Prince Mohamed Bolkiah and His Royal Highness Prince Haji Sufri Bolkiah.
Upon arrival, His Majesty was greeted by Minister of Education Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Hamzah bin Haji Sulaiman and Minister of Religious Affairs Pehin Udana Khatib Dato Paduka Seri Setia Ustaz Haji Awang Badaruddin bin Pengarah Dato Paduka Haji Awang Othman, in their capacity as the co-chairmen of the celebration.
The celebration commenced with the recitation of Surah Al-Fatihah by State Mufti Pehin Datu Seri Maharaja Dato Paduka Seri Setia (Dr) Ustaz Haji Awang Abdul Aziz bin Juned in memory of Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Muhammad Jamalul Alam and teachers who had passed away, followed by a Doa Selamat.
It continued with the reading of verses of Al-Quran, Surah Ar-Rum, Verses 20-24 by Education Officer at the Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Hajah Saleha Girls Arabic Religious Secondary School Haji Hazwan bin Haji Salim, Qari champion of the National Youth Al-Quran Reading Competition 2012. Its interpretation was delivered by Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Usuluddin at the Universiti Islam Sultan Sharif Ali (UNISSA) Haji Muhammad Khairul Nazif bin Haji Damit, and continued with a welcoming address by the Minister of Education.
The ceremony was enlivened with several performances including Syair Laila Hasrat as well as 29th Teacher’s Day theme songs medley, and choirs.
His Majesty consented to present Teacher’s Day awards to 27 recipients. Three received the Meritorious Teacher Award – Pengiran Datin Paduka Hajah Mariam binti Pengiran Haji Matarsat, Dato Paduka Haji Ishaaq bin Haji Abdullah and Hajah Halimah binti Mohd Ya’akub.
The Excellent Teacher Award was presented to four – Dr Lim Lee Hoon from Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD), Zulkipli bin Hamid from School of Energy and Engineering (Satellite) of Institute of Brunei Technical Education (IBTE) Sultan Bolkiah Campus, Rossaleni binti Haji Selamat of Masin Secondary School and Lim Kian Boon of IBTE.
Meanwhile, the Special Mention Teacher’s Day Appreciation Award was presented to 20 – Dr Rahayu Sukmaria binti Haji Sukri, Suzanah binti Haji Kurus, Associate Professor Dr Siti Sara binti Haji Ahmad, Dr Tang Shi Shiong, Dr Jainatul Halida binti Jaidin, Pengiran Mohammad Hassan bin Pengiran Haji Abdul Rahman, Mohammad Hizami bin Abdul Razak, Arman bin Haji Jakut, Dr Lee Kok Yueh, Helen Chin Sout Hung, Hajah Irwane binti Haji Md Zine, Hisham bin Haji Abdul Salam, Norahdianah binti Haji Mahadi, Hajah Rafeah binti Haji Hamdan, Saridah binti Simen, Kwan Pei Yun, Hajah Noorafidah binti Haji Abdullah, Hajah Rohana binti Haji Hamdan, Adlina Rahayu binti Haji Zaini and Hajah Rohani binti Haji Mohd Salleh.
His Majesty and members of the royal family consented to a group photo with the award recipients and executive committee members of the celebration, and then toured the exhibitions.
The concept of the exhibition focussed on three areas in line with this year’s theme, ‘Quality Education as the Core of Students’ Excellence’. The three areas were the excerpts of His Majesty’s titah and poem of Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien, the Educational Innovation Section and Lifelong Learning Section.
Prior to leaving, His Majesty and members of the royal family consented to a Junjung Ziarah from teachers, students from various levels of education and institutions as well as performance participants.
