Donating blood for a good cause

Fourth year Biomedical Science students in Cohort 9 of Pengiran Anak Puteri Rashidah Sa’adatul Bolkiah Institute of Health Sciences (PAPRSB IHS), Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) held a blood donation drive yesterday.

It was held in cooperation with the Blood Donation Centre, Department of Laboratory Services of Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Saleha (RIPAS) Hospital of the Ministry of Health for restoring blood supplies, as well as to create awareness among UBD officers, lecturers, students and the public on the importance of blood donation.

There was also a fundraising programme for the Children’s Cancer Foundation (YASKA).

The drive was held at the PAPRSB IHS, UBD. Acting Dean of PAPRSB IHS, UBD Dr Zaw Wint was the chief guest.

Dr Zaw Wint said the blood donation drive was organised by the students to contribute to the society. One of the event’s main objectives was to gather a good number of blood donors.

He added the event also gathered donations for YASKA, a local organisation that provides support to children with cancer and their families. The funding obtained will be used for their activities and programmes.

Every September is recognised as Childhood Cancer Awareness Month by childhood cancer organisations around the world.

The public donated via online banking or through a donation box located at Subbstation, PAPRSB IHS, UBD and R&C Café, Business Library, UBD from September 16-26.

Takaful Brunei

Takaful Brunei organised a blood donation drive in collaboration with Jerudong Park Medical Centre (JPMC) at the first floor of the Takaful Brunei Head Office in Bandar Seri Begawan.

Officials at nearby offices and the public were invited to participate in the blood donation drive.

Carrying the theme ‘Donate Blood, Save Lives. Every Drop Matters’, Takaful Brunei believes in how crucial it is to help in saving lives by donating blood. Successful blood donors received free popsicles from popular local vendor Kyna.

Takaful Brunei will continue similar missions to create more awareness to the public as well as a reminder that every effort helps.

With their slogan ‘Together We Protect’, Takaful Brunei plans regular blood donation drives as part of their corporate social responsibility.

Institute of Brunei Technical Education, Jefri Bolkiah Campus

Over 39 students, staff members and instructors at the Institute of Brunei Technical Education (IBTE) Jefri Bolkiah Campus (JBC) participated in a blood donation campaign at the campus’ multi-purpose hall on Wednesday.

The campaign was organised by the IBTE JBC with aid from the Blood Donation Centre, Department of Laboratory Services, Ministry of Health.

Among the 39 attendees at the blood donation campaign, ranging from 18 to 30 years, 27 were fit to donate blood.

The campaign’s purpose was to help increase blood supplies at the Blood Donation Centre.

It was also held to bring awareness to the students that donating blood is a good practice and a healthy way of life.

Many participating students were first-time blood donors and some said they were at first afraid, but later found out that it was not as painful as was expected and that they plan to donate again.

The campaign will continue as part of an initiative to help hospitals replenish blood supply.
