CHMS holds Youth Empowerment Conference

Chung Hwa Middle School, BSB selected 30 students to attend a conference at Jerudong International School (JIS). The conference was held on September 7.

Themed, ‘Own Your Future’, the conference focussed on three main topics – Global Mindset, Future of Work and Values. There were over 30 distinguished speakers including thought leaders and highly accomplished and respected role models of society, with a number of them being outstanding young leaders from Brunei and 11 other countries. There were over 700 youth from 20 different schools and institutions across Brunei who attended the conference, including Chung Hwa Middle School BSB.

The conference aimed to impart knowledge among youth to face challenges, and increase their level of creativity to become future leaders.

The conference was held from 8.45am until 5pm. During the opening ceremony of the conference, a recitation of Surah Al-Fatihah was read, and it was followed by an opening speech by Nurul Haniah binti Haji Jaafar, Chief Administration Office at Progresif. The welcoming remark was delivered by guest of honour, Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports Major General (Rtd) Dato Paduka Seri Awang Haji Aminuddin Ihsan bin Pehin Orang Kaya Saiful Mulok Dato Seri Paduka Haji Abidin.

The conference comprised a keynote address delivered by Mark Laitflang Stone, Entrepreneur, Speaker and founder of Avenues, India, and five panel sessions with the topic ‘To Succeed, Is Education Enough?’ conducted by Mark Laitflang Stone; Dato Timothy Ong, Chairman, Asia Inc Forum, Brunei; Harina Ramlee, Corporate Services Manager, TOTAL, Brunei; and Dr Chang Yau Hoon, Associate Professor, Universiti Brunei Darussalam, Brunei.

‘The Future Of Work’ with Dr Sandy Chong, President of the United Nations Associations, Western Australia; Ray Ong, Regional Director, UBTECH, Singapore/China; Afif Mohammad Ali, Country Managing Director, Microsoft, Brunei; and Saedah binti Haji Hasnal, Women Techmakers, Google Developers Group, Brunei Chapter, Brunei.

‘Tango With Social Media’ with Devin Edwards, CMO, Progresif, USA/Brunei; Dr Alex Fischer, founder and Dean, Mahakarya Institute of Arts Asia, USA/Brunei; and Todd McPherson, Counseling Psychologist, Riverview Medical Clinic, Canada/Brunei.

‘Global Mindset’ with Richard Lindsay, British High Commissioner to Brunei Darussalam, Louise Mabulo, Chef, Entrepreneur, UN Outstanding Youth Ambassador, Philippines; Dr Sandy Chong; and David O’Hagan, co-Founder, Kick Fire Kitchen Canada.

‘What Bosses Want?’ with KarFei Cheah, Forbes Coaches Council Executive Member and founder, Life Redesigned, Malaysia; Haji Sophian bin Dato Seri Setia Dr Haji Mat Suny, CEO of Brupay, Brunei; Zul Amali bin Dato Paduka Haji Idris, Founder and CEO of DART and Outstanding Youth Project Award Winner, 2019; Daniel Wong, Managing Director of CIC Environment Services.

There was also a one-to-one interview held with Louise Mabulo and Amy Cheong and Madri Hedus, founders of Relentless Entertainment Studios.

In conclusion, this kind of conference relatively on Youth Empowerment should be held more often in the future. The conference has received large participants from the public and the response was encouraging.
