Butthan combat sports are a system of self-defence and personal development.
According to Acharya Yuree Vajramunee, who is as an advisor for the Brunei Butthan Association, Butthan is “the noble art of stopping-fight and enlightenment”.
As he explained in a recent interview, Butthan has four pillars – sports, self-purification, well-being and self-defence.
The South Asian sport is based on cooperation, empathy, personal development and positive motivation. Acharya Yuree – better known as Dr Yuree – spends most of his time travelling around the world, actively promoting the Butthan Combat Sports System, which he founded.
He has travelled to about 50 countries including Brunei, and has 40 different martial arts systems in his life.
Butthanchariyas, who are Butthan practitioners, are highly influenced by Dr Yuree’s iconic philosophy of personal development, which he explained is about “winning over yourself and going beyond personal limits or surpassing set limits”.
“Butthan emphasises the teaching to challenge personal limits rather than challenging someone else inside and even outside the mat. It is a special competitive system, the first-ever introduced globally as ‘Co-Competition’ through Butthan Sports, to depict the unique non-aggressive, cooperation-based path of empowerment,” said Dr Yuree. The Co-Competition system aims to convey that both the competitors can win and one does not necessarily need to be defeated to make the other one come out victorious.
Dedicated training helps one to transform the body to balance physical, mental, emotional and spiritual spheres and thereby attain self-mastery.
The Brunei Butthan Association received the Certificate of Affiliation of the International Butthan Federation from the Bangladesh High Commission in Brunei Darussalam in 2018.
Legislative Council member and Village Head of Kampong Limau Manis Yang Berhormat Haji Mohimin bin Haji Johari @ Jahari is the President of the Brunei Butthan Association.
Speaking on Brunei, Dr Yuree said, “Being the Chief Technical Advisor I am glad to be able to share my expertise with the
association here and conduct fruitful discussions with the President of the Brunei Butthan Association and provide it with the technical information, rules and practice methods.”
Dr Yuree also expressed hope that positive results will come up soon with the introduction of the Buttan Combat Sports System to sports events in the country.
