A total of BND904,537.43, which was raised from public contributions through the ‘Dignity is Priceless’ campaign, was handed over to United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) yesterday to help the plight of Palestine refugees.
The ‘Dignity is Priceless’ campaign was a collaborative project between the Ministry of Religious Affairs (MoRA) and the UNRWA during Ramadhan this year.
Minister of Religious Affairs Pehin Udana Khatib Dato Paduka Seri Setia Ustaz Haji Awang Badaruddin bin Pengarah Dato Paduka Haji Awang Othman, as the Joint Advisor to the Committee for the Humanitarian Assistance Fund project for Palestine Refugees, handed over the contributions to Director of Strategic Partnerships at the UNRWA Abdi Aynte in a ceremony at Multaqa Hall, MoRA yesterday.
The Minister of Religious Affairs also received donations for the Dignity Is Priceless campaign from Brunei Islamic Religious Council (MUIB), Ministry of Defence, DST and Progresif Cellular Sdn Bhd.
Acting Secretary of MUIB Haji Abdul Aziz bin Haji Akop handed over BND500,000 for the Humanitarian Assistance Fund for Palestine Refugees to the Minister of Religious Affairs.
Meanwhile, Commander of the Royal Brunei Armed Forces (RBAF) Major General Pengiran Dato Paduka Seri Aminan bin Pengiran Haji Mahmud handed over BND4,681.10, which was collected from staff and personnel of RBAF.
A total of BND108,890 was collected by DST for the fund, of which BND103,890 was contributions by the public through the SMS Brunei Prihatin collective drive. The remaining BND5,000 was contributed by DST.
Assistant General Manager of DST Corporate Services Ramlah binti Haji Rabaha presented the mock cheque to the Minister of Religious Affairs.
Progresif Cellular Sdn Bhd handed over a donation of BND16,468, which was handed over by Government Relations Manager of Progresif Cellular Sdn Bhd Hajah Normah binti Ahmad.
Permanent Secretary at the MoRA Dato Seri Setia Haji Abdul Aziz bin Orang Kaya Maharaja Lela Haji Yussof said, “We understand the Palestinian refugees are struggling simply to survive, unable to feed their children properly and this is our obligation as a nation and as human beings to feel and share their pain and sufferings in line with the concept of Maqasid Syar’ie which refers to protecting and preserving faith, life, intellect, prosperity and wealth.”
“The campaign collects funds to enable UNRWA to assist registered Palestinian refugees in Gaza, West Bank (including East Jerusalem), Jordan, Syria and Lebanon. Alhamdulillah, through determined efforts and relentless support from various parties within the government and generous donations from the public, we are able to collect an amount of BND904,537.43,” he added.
On behalf of MoRA, he conveyed his appreciation for the success of the campaign to the dedicated team of youth groups, officers and staff from various government agencies and private sectors.
