Brunei Darussalam Under-16 team crashed out of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Under-16 Championship 2020 Qualifiers after they were defeated 8-0 by group hosts Indonesia at the Madya Stadium in Jakarta on Friday.

The young Wasps ended up in a rare situation for a possible qualification if they pulled off a giant-killing scalp against a much-favoured outfit following their morale-boosting 5-1 win in their second Group ‘G’ match against Northern Mariana Islands.

However, the young Garuda coasted to a comfortable victory and now will go into their match against incumbent group leaders China locked in a battle to determine the group winners.

Indonesia opened the scoring through a penalty converted by Ahmad Athallah Araihan in the 19th minute.

Brunei managed to frustrate their opponents for large periods of the game in the first half as Indonesia only doubled their lead in the 43rd minute through Aditiya Daffa Al Haqi.

Indonesia extended their lead through another spot-kick with responsibilities this time falling to Marselino Ferdinan and the forward provided the same outcome with a goal.

Indonesia’s substitute Mochamad Faizal Shaifullah and forward Ruy Arianto also joined in the act with efforts in the 61st and 63rd minute, respectively.

Faizal Shaifullah scored his second goal of the night six minutes later before Arianto and Al Haqi further piled more misery on Brunei with their respective late efforts. The young Wasps will conclude their campaign against already-eliminated the Philippines in their final group match at the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium in Jakarta today.

Brunei will finish third in the group if they conjure a victory against the young Azkals, with both teams on the same number of points and separated only by goal difference.
