As a long-standing traditional sporting event for Brunei Darussalam, the Brunei Darussalam Regatta 2019 this year saw an overwhelming response from youth.

The regatta was held in conjunction with His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam’s 73rd birthday celebration.

Minister of Home Affairs Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Kerna Dato Seri Setia (Dr) Haji Awang Abu Bakar bin Haji Apong highlighted this during an interview at the regatta yesterday, adding that the 12 events held were largely participated by youth.

“With this, we can further encourage participation from secondary school students, as well as higher education institutions and the youth in general,” he said.

The minister hoped that such events will inspire the youth and other agencies (apart from ministries) to work in further improving their regatta performance.

He hoped the regatta event will not just be held once a year, but will be initiated by other agencies, taking the Ministry of Home Affairs (MoHA) as an example. MoHA co-organises other annual regatta events through mukims and villages on a smaller scale.

“Likewise, we at the MoHA will also be holding a regatta in the Belait District this September. We hope this will receive large participation as well,” the minister added.

Continuously organising regatta events will enable it to become a sustainable activity, where the highlight of these events can be witnessed during His Majesty’s birthday celebrations.

“We hope this will be welcomed by everyone,” the minister added.
