A TEAM of young coders from Belait Arabic School is representing Brunei Darussalam in the ASEAN Cyberkids Camp 2019 which began yesterday. It continues until tomorrow in Hanoi, Vietnam.

The participants from Belait Arabic School are Siti Alwani Insyirah binti Haji Mustafa and Muhammad Akmal Hamzah bin Aminorddin. The school was the winner of the TechKids Camp 2019 organised by the Authority for Info-communications Technology of Brunei Darussalam (AITI) earlier this year.

According to a press release from AITI, this year’s ASEAN Cyberkids Camp sees the participation of 10 teams from all ASEAN member states, with each member state represented by one team of two students aged between seven and 12.

During the competition, the participants are tasked to produce creative multimedia programming projects using Scratch software.

The ASEAN Cyberkids Camp is an annual competition aimed at enhancing the students’ skills in critical thinking, teamwork and ability to use ICT creatively. It has become one of the ASEAN level activities which aims to promote regional cooperation and integration among ASEAN member states, the press release noted.

The camp is one of the initiatives under the ASEAN Telecommunications and IT Ministers Meeting (TELMIN) that is supported by the ASEAN Telecommunications and IT Senior Officials Meeting (TELSOM), in which AITI is actively involved.

Brunei Darussalam hosted the ASEAN Cyberkids Camp 2018 for the first time in September last year at The Rizqun International Hotel in Gadong.

The press release added that with the emerging 4th Industrial Revolution (IR4.0) and in a bid to establish Brunei Darussalam as a Smart Nation, youth need to be equipped with new skillsets which will enable them to adapt to emerging technologies such as AI, IoT and Big Data seamlessly.

It was shared that AITI has been proactively promoting the development of ICT awareness and skills among the young students with various programmes including the Tech Kids Camp and Hackathon for Teens.
