Team Cluster 5 crowned champions

Team Cluster 5 emerged champions of the 29th Teacher’s Day celebration netball championship after coming through with a 28-23 win against Cluster 2A in a nail-biting final at the multi-purpose hall of Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports Complex yesterday afternoon.

Deputy Minister of Education Datin Seri Paduka Dr Hajah Romaizah binti Haji Mohd Salleh, the guest of honour, watched the final and presented the prizes.

Both teams went head to head in the final with the score levels in two quarter (7-7 in the first quarter and 12-12 in the second quarter).

Cluster 2A finally took a one point lead at 20-19 after the third quarter, however Cluster 5 managed to come back to take the lead in the final quarter for the crucial win. Third place went to Green Jewel that beat Cluster 4 28-27.

Permanent Secretary (Core Education) at the Ministry of Education Dr Shamsiah Zuraini Kanchanawati binti Haji Tajuddin and Acting Director-General of Education Hajah Anis Faudzulani binti Haji Dzulkiflee were also present.

The award for Best Centre Court player went to Dayangku Sri Ridwanah binti Pengiran Matarsat of Team Cluster 2A while the for Best Shooter award went to Hajah Kamsiah of team Cluster 5 with 63 goals in the tournament. Kumalasari binti Haji Abdul Latiff of Team Cluster 2A received the Best Defender award.

The championship was organised by Co-Curriculum Education Department at the Ministry of Education (MoE) with the cooperation of the Brunei Netball Association in conjunction with the 29th Teacher’s Day celebration.

The tournament was open to all teachers working under the MoE, higher learning institutions, secondary schools, primary schools, colleges and sixth form centres. A total of 12 teams took part in the championship.

The event aimed to further foster closer ties among officers, teachers and staff as well as unearth potential netball players to be included in the MoE team and also as a project to build netball for the ministry in the long run.
