Renew passports early to avoid unnecessary problems

THE Department of Immigration and National Registration, Ministry of Home Affairs refers to the letter ‘Clarification on passport renewals needed’ by Abdul Halim published in the Opinion page of the Borneo Bulletin on July 24.

The department would like to thank the writer for expressing concern and the request for clarification on passport renewal.

The department would like to clarify that a majority of countries would require travellers to have a passport with a validity of not less than six months.

It is also advised for any individuals to check the passport requirements (including visa) of the intended destination prior to their travel.

The department recommends individuals with passport validity of less than six months to renew his/her passport prior to travel to avoid unnecessary problems.

The department would also like to clarify that the issuance of passport and driving licence have different concept especially in terms of their purposes and thus requirements in general pertaining to the two are therefore also notably different.

The matter is currently under review and would like to thank the writer for raising the concern.

The writer is welcome to visit the department during office hours should he wish to discuss the issue further.

Alternatively, the public can send an e-mail to [email protected] or call 2381107.
