The Regatta Brunei Darussalam will be held this Sunday at the Dermaga Diraja in conjunction with the 73rd birthday of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, Permanent Secretary (Safety, Welfare and Law) at the Ministry of Home Affairs (MoHA) Mohd Amir Hairil bin Haji Mahmud said yesterday.
The boat races will be held at 7.30am for the morning session and at 1pm for the afternoon session.
His Majesty is scheduled to be present for the afternoon session, while His Royal Highness Prince Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah ibni His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah, the Crown Prince and Senior Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office will attend the morning session.
Mohd Amir Hairil who is also Co-Chair of the Brunei Darussalam Regatta Executive Committee, said that 12 regatta races will be held – six in the morning and six in the afternoon.
These include a fibreglass regatta race between districts involving 20 rowers; an open traditional race involving 25 rowers; a fibreglass race among youth aged 30 and below, involving 15 rowers; a two-rower traditional race among ministries; a 20-rower fiberglass race among private companies; an open traditional race involving 30 rowers; a special fiberglass race involving 15 rowers; a fibreglass race for youth aged 30 and below involving 20 rowers; a fibreglass race among higher institutions involving 15 rowers; a fibreglass race among colleges and secondary schools involving 15 rowers; an open youth category involving 20 rowers; and a marathon regatta race involving 30 rowers.
The 100-metre race will be flagged off at the Arts and Handicraft Training Centre, with the 2,000-metre race to be held at the Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Hajah Saleha Bridge and the 5,000-metre marathon race at Pulau Si Bongor. All three races will take place along a route on the Brunei River that ends at the Dermaga Diraja.
Three teams from Sabah, Lawas and the Federal Territory of Labuan will also take part, in addition to one team from the People’s Republic of China and one team from Indonesia.
Meanwhile, Co-Secretary of the Exhibition Committee of the regatta Haji Muhammad Ruzaini bin Haji Mohd Daud said the Museums Department will organise the 2019 Regatta Exhibition at the Dermaga Diraja Art Gallery to glorify the Brunei Darussalam Regatta held in honour of His Majesty’s 73rd birthday.
The 2019 regatta exhibition is themed ‘Preserving Malay Technology Heritage: Boating’, chosen in reference to boating activities that have become a symbol of Malay culture, especially among the people of Kampong Ayer.
Key features of the exhibition include the involvement of His Majesty in the regatta event of 2017-2018, the involvement of Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Muhammad Jamalul Alam in the regatta event of 1950-1970, and the involvement of the royal family in the regatta event of 2017-2018.
There will be a display of photographs depicting various types of boats, alongside images of the culture and society in Kampong Ayer, by students from Politeknik Brunei under the School of Information and Communication Technology.
This year’s exhibition will also showcase a number of museum collections, including boating models such as the Pengalu and Bidar.
The exhibition will be further enlivened with a boat-making demonstration by an experienced craftsman Haji Asgar bin Othman.
The public is welcome to attend the exhibition at the Dermaga Diraja. From August 25-31, it will be open at 9am to 4.30pm daily, except on Friday when it will be open from 9am to 11.30am and from 2.30pm to 4.30pm.
