Meet highlights Brunei’s knee problems

“Problems around the knee are one of the most prevalent orthopaedic conditions in this country. They affect all ages from the young to the old,” said President of Orthopaedic Society of Brunei Darussalam Dr Haji Abdul Rashid bin Haji Mohamad.

He made these comments at the 4th Biennial Scientific Meeting Orthopaedic Society at the Empire Hotel & Country Club officiated by Minister of Health Dato Seri Setia Dr Haji Mohd Isham bin Haji Jaafar yesterday.

Knee conditions include congenital deformities in children, primary bone tumours in the young, sports injuries in the active, degenerative disease in the elderly and infection in the infants as well as immunocompromised.

Unfortunately, Dr Haji Abdul Rashid said, “Failure to recognise some of the conditions can be fatal to the patient or destructive to the knee joint.

Hence it is of upmost important to educate the first line health professionals namely primary healthcare physicians and the accident emergency doctors to whom these patients will be presented their knee problem to.”

He also stressed the importance to be updated on current and new treatment options that can be offered by the orthopaedic surgeons on various knee conditions.

Head of the orthopaedic department at Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Saleha (RIPAS) Hospital Dr Haji Md Khairul Azmi bin Haji Abdul Kadir touched on the development of Orthopaedic Department.

Senior Medical Officer at Orthopaedic Department Dr Hajah Liza Ishak spoke on knee problems in Brunei Darussalam.

She stressed on the importance of early referrals to avoid long term complication and the awareness of multiple knee problems in the country.

She also touched on paediatric orthopaedics, sports injury, adult reconstruction, trauma, musculoskeletal oncology and infection.

The event brings together over 100 primary healthcare professions to discuss and listen on topics surrounding on the theme ‘Orthopaedic Problems Around the Knee’.
