A LOCAL man was ordered to settle a BND1,000 fine, or serve a month’s imprisonment in default, after he pleaded guilty to assaulting his mother.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Syazwani binti Jumat informed court that Muhammad Hairul Sumardi bin General, 31, was at home in RPN Kampong Bukit Beruang, Tutong, at 3pm on August 6, when his mother scolded him for slamming the bathroom door.

He responded by shouting and pointing his finger at her, but soon grew quiet when she refused to retaliate.

The defendant settled down in the living room to watch television, but then became enraged on overhearing his mother complaining about him to his father.

He ran to his father’s room, where he grabbed hold of a machete and unsheathed it, causing his parents to flee for their safety.

They lodged a report at the Tutong Police Station, which led to his arrest.

Magistrate Pengiran Hazirah binti Pengiran Haji Mohd Yusof presided over the case.
