HIS Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam yesterday told Bruneian students in the Arab Republic of Egypt to “apply the blessings of health and happiness from Allah the Almighty as an ‘investment capital’ for the benefits of this world and the hereafter.”
“The worldly benefits are acquired knowledge and experience, which can be used for the Ummah and nation-building. The immensity of knowledge can be easily explained by looking at the world’s developed nations,” His Majesty said in a titah during the get-together ceremony with Bruneian citizens and students at the Intercontinental Cairo Citystars Hotel.
“Regarding the benefits of the hereafter, seeking knowledge is an obligation for all Muslims, particularly religious knowledge, which is a Fardhu ‘Ain (religious obligation), while other forms of knowledge are a Fardhu Kifayah (collective responsibility),” said the monarch, adding that it has been His Majesty’s Government’s policy to provide free education and award scholarships to eligible students.
Describing the students as “pioneers (calak zaman)” who will shape the history of the Brunei people and nation, His Majesty also expressed hope that the graduates of Islamic higher educational institutions, especially those of Al-Azhar University, would follow in the footsteps of previous generations who rendered their learning and knowledge for the good of the country.
His Majesty concluded his titah by calling on the students to cultivate other skills, as an added value to formal education.
Earlier, upon arrival at the venue, His Majesty was greeted by Ambassador of Brunei Darussalam to the Arab Republic of Egypt Pengiran Haji Mustapa bin Pengiran Haji Aliuddin and President of the Brunei Darussalam Student’s Welfare Body in the Arab Republic of Egypt Haji Muhammad Hasif bin Haji Awang.
Shortly afterwards, His Majesty signed a commemorative parchment before being invited to partake in a photo session with senior officers of the Brunei Darussalam Embassy in the Arab Republic of Egypt and executive members of the Brunei Darussalam Student’s Welfare Body.
His Majesty then proceeded for light refreshments with the student representatives.
Later, His Majesty proceeded to the Al-Saraya Hall for the Get-Together Ceremony, which began with the singing of the national athem and recitation of verses from Al-Quran by Mohammad Rohaidi bin Johadi, a student at the Faculty of Usuluddin at Al-Azhar University.
A recitation in the style of Riwayat Warsh was then made by Afiq Haririe bin Haji Awang Mat Daud, a student of Ma’had Qiraat Shoubra, while the interpretation was read by Haji Mohammad Waez bin Haji Ramlee of the Arabic Language Faculty at Al-Azhar University.
This was followed by a Doa Selamat by State Mufti Pehin Datu Seri Maharaja Dato Paduka Seri Setia (Dr) Ustaz Haji Awang Abdul Aziz bin Juned.
The event continued with a welcoming address by Haji Muhammad Hasif, who also delivered a pledge of loyalty and allegiance to His Majesty on behalf of the Brunei citizens and students present.
His Majesty then received a pesambah presented by Haji Muhammad Hasif.
The ceremony also featured a Tausyeh performance by the Bruneian students.
His Majesty met and mingled with around 250 Brunei citizens and residents, comprising government officials, students and tourists before leaving the event.
