An Indonesian domestic helper who pleaded guilty to stealing BND4,000 from her employer was sentenced to eight months’ jail by the Magistrate’s Court yesterday.
Hen Sasmita, 22, had entered her employer’s bedroom, rummaged through the wardrobe and took BND1,000 which she found inside a bag in December 2018. Her employer was on vacation in London.
She sought help from another maid from a neighbouring household to remit the money to her family in Indonesia.
In the same month, the woman found another BND1,000 from a bag inside the wardrobe, sought help from the same person and remitted the money back home.
In May this year, the defendant went into her employer’s bedroom when nobody was around, found BND2,000 while rummaging through her employer’s computer desk and sought help from the household gardener to remit the money to her family in Indonesia.
This month, the defendant’s employer on realising that money was missing, asked the gardener who in turn revealed the defendant’s request for help to remit BND2,000 to her family in Indonesia in May.
The defendant’s employer lodged a police report. Investigations led to the woman’s arrest.
DPP Hajah Siti Mu’izzah binti Haji Sabli prosecuted, while Magistrate Kamaliah Fadhilah binti Haji Ibrahim presided.
