THE Magistrate’s Court yesterday handed a sentence of 10 months’ jail with three lashes to a 45-year-old Indonesian man after he pleaded guilty on Wednesday to a charge of housebreaking and overstaying.
The defendant said he committed the offence to collect bird’s nest, a popular delicacy in Brunei and Asia, adding that he knew he could find them at the house as he “had entered it thrice earlier”.
DPP Raihan Nabilah binti Haji Ahmad Ghazali informed Magistrate Pengiran Hazirah binti Pengiran Haji Mohd Yusof that the defendant Wariyo bin Rahmat was noticed by a security guard patrolling Bandtree Sdn Bhd properties before midnight on July 15.
The security guard heard noises from House Number 12 of the Royal Brunei Polo Club, and noticed that one of its plywood walls broken.
He returned to his post and informed his supervisor.
The guard and his supervisor, along with four other colleagues, inspected the site and found the defendant hiding behind a door in the house.
The security guards lodged a police report, leading to the defendant’s arrest.
