LAKSAMANA College of Business (LCB) and Politeknik Brunei (PB) kicked off the opening match of the Higher Education Institutions Futsal League at the Multi-Purpose Hall Sports Complex at Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) last night, which ended in a 2-2 draw.
PB were dominant in the first half with a barrage of attacks but LCB took the lead through Muhammad Imtiyaz bin Ahmad Uzir in the 12th minute.
Abdul Hanan bin Haji Abass levelled the scores in the 17th minute before Muhammad Wafiuddin bin Tamit pushed PB into the lead in the 22nd minute.
PB looked to kill the game with a third goal but LCB dug deep and found their reward when Ahmad Waie Haji Mohammad stabbed home the equaliser in the 28th minute.
UBD and Alumni PB drew 1-1 in the second match of the night. Mohammad Abi Syarillizam bin Sabtu scored for UBD while Mohammad Ikmal Hakim bin Haji Md Yunos scored for Alumni PB.
The league hosted by PB is an initiative of the Centre for Student Development and Innovation which is keen to expand and progress of the sport in the level of higher education.
Besides that, by having such a league this will smoothen the selection session to represent higher education and compete in local and overseas competitions such as Brunei Darussalam National Games and ASEANUniversity Games.
The guest of honour at the event was the Acting Assistant Director of PB Hajah Hanipah binti Haji Apong.
Also present were heads of departments and schools, officers, lecturers, students from various institutions as well as members of the public mainly supporters of the respective teams.
The championship is open to staff and students under higher education institutions in Brunei Darussalam. Ten teams are competing in the league namely PB, UBD, Universiti Teknologi Brunei (UTB), Universiti Islam Sultan Sharif Ali (UNISSA), Cosmopolitan College, Institute of Brunei Technical Education (IBTE), Laksamana College of Business, Alumni PB, Religious Teachers University College of Seri Begawan (KUPU SB) and Kolej International Graduate Studies (KIGS).
The objectives of the tournament include introduce, develop and increase the level as well as quality of futsal in the level of higher education; strengthen the bond among undergraduates in higher education institutions as well as an alternative to be active and to participate in a sport for health.
