Fitness Zone-Juramas emerged champions of the You.C1000 Cup after they defeated Easyway 70-65 at the Brunei Basketball Association (BBA) Basketball Court in Batu Bersurat last night.
Fitness Zone’s Esmond Tan scored a game-high 19 points while teammate Francis Barcellano contributed with 16 points.
Easyway’s Ahmad Termizi and Hung Ing Wai managed 17 points each in a losing effort while Benjamin Sim chipped in with 14 points.
Ahmad Termizi also hit consecutive treys as his team looked to keep in touch with Fitness Zone, who enjoyed an explosive start in the first quarter.
Fitness Zone’s Wu Chun hailed the team’s unity and teamwork which led them to victory in the final.
“I think for us, teamwork wins the game. All the players contribute towards the game at different points of time, so whenever someone is not playing well enough, somebody comes in and covers up,” said Wu Chun in an interview with the Bulletin.
“I like that kind of spirit and for Fitness Zone, it has been many years since we took part in the Sultan Cup. After so many years and we came back to win the championship, of course it is a great feeling. We hope to be back again next year.”
Fitness Zone-Juramas had to overcome a psychological setback after they found themselves behind Easyway by seven points in the third quarter, having earlier established a 15-point lead in the first quarter.
“We have a competitive mind-set. We don’t give up and we always believe that we can come back,” Wu Chun added.
“We encourage each other to play good defence so in the fourth quarter, I think we played really good defence and that’s the key to winning the game in the end.” Wu Chun said that Fitness Zone was making a comeback to the Sultan Cup competitions after an absence for almost a decade.
“I stopped playing basketball for quite a long time. Recently, I came back to play again and formed a team.”
Asked on his thoughts about strong teams such as Easyway and YTE, he said, “I think everyone played really well and the best thing is everyone tried their best.”
Meanwhile, YTE secured third place after they defeated TK Teahouse 106-87.
