A local couple were produced in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday, as suspects in the death of a 16-month-old toddler.
Mohammad Helmi bin Serabah, 39, is accused of murdering the child on the afternoon of August 26, at a house at RPN Kampong Lambak Kanan.
Ampuan Roslinah binti Ampuan Abdul Rahman, meanwhile, is accused of assaulting the child in the same house between August 19 and 24, causing her to sustain physical injuries.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Nor Hafizah Ahmad informed court that the police launched investigations into the child’s death, after being alerted by medics at 9.38pm on August 26. Mohammad Helmi was arrested at 7.35pm on August 27, while Ampuan Roslinah was arrested at 10.30pm.
The prosecution also said that the police will need to conduct further investigations into the case, which include obtaining a post-mortem report and doctors’ statements.
Chief Magistrate Pengiran Masni binti Pengiran Haji Bahar, in view of the case being in its initial stages, adjourned the case to September 5, and ordered the pair to be remanded under police custody. Mohammad Helmi faces the death penalty if the charge against him is proved, while Ampuan Roslinah faces a fine of BND20,000 and 10 years’ imprisonment.
