Brunei national basketball team aims to defend title

THE Brunei men’s national basketball team trained hard with hopes to defend the Borneo Intercity Basketball Tournament title.

This was revealed by Darren Yap, captain of the men’s team during an interview with the Bulletin yesterday.

The Brunei Basketball Association (BBA) will field a contingent comprising 45 players and officials in the Borneo Intercity Basketball Tournament 2019 in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah today.

The tournament will conclude on August 4.

The team includes a mix of senior and young players. The players are Darren Yap, Khoo Chin Kai, Brendan Lim, William Ching, Zainul Hussin, Soon Kian Leong, Gideon Fung, Benjamin Sim, Shin Jan Ting, Onn Jen Hao, Fang Bo Yuan and Ahmad Termizi Haji Noordeen. The team is led by Coach Mohammad Sofrian.

“There are some changes in the squad compared to the last championship. We want to go into this with confidence. We understand that other teams are also very good,” said Darren Yap, captain of the men’s team.

Speaking on the first match against the Miri team, he said, “They are strong and the team also includes some senior players from the last tournament. We will compete hard to get the first win. We understand that wining the opening match is very important to set the tone and build the momentum.”

The Brunei National women and veteran teams will also compete.

The women’s team players are Chloe Chen, Nur Marsya, Ti Li Ying, Yu Sze Tee, Dk Normawarshikin, Ashley Khoo, Nuraqmal Nadia Farhana, Vanessa Pang, Goh Hui Teng, Ho Chia Yin, Kayleigh Patricia Lee and Wei Theen. The team is led by coach Lee Moi Leng.

The national veteran team players, led by Coach Yeo Ting Si and manager Lee Han Chiok, are Lim Fung, Lim Boon Teck, Richard Tan, Goh Hock Lai, Liu Kun Shyong, Seit Bong Siong, Andy Kho, Kenny Lim, Fong Yih Leong, Chen Yiek Seng, Ho Hee Lee and Malcolm Lau.

“All teams started preparation early this year. We are happy with the progress of the team and confident of attainting good results,” said Secretary General of Brunei Basketball Association Lim Fung. “We also added several youth into the men’s team to gain exposure and experience for future tournaments.”

Chairman of BBA Alex Kwang Ming Hing visited the players on Wednesday night at the Batu Bersurat basketball court to show support.
