Abdul Zahirul Haq winner of National Youth Under-20 Chess Championship

Katok Secondary School’s Abdul Zahirul Haq bin Zazali emerged champion of the National Youth Under-20 Chess Rapid Championship 2019 held in conjunction with the 73rd birthday celebration of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam at the Brunei Chess Centre of the Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports Complex recently.

Kamarul Ariffin bin Haji Kipli of Sultan Muhammad Jamalul Alam Secondary School finished as runner-up while Sebastian Sea Chen Hung of Tutong Sixth Form Centre claimed third place.

In the Under-18 category, Kamarul Ariffin won first place while second place went to Sebastian Sea Chen Hung.

Abdul Zahirul Haq was ranked first in the Under-16 category with Kyla Marie of St George’s School taking second place.

Meanwhile, in the under-12 category, Nur Zahirah Zafira binti Zazali won first place. Awangku Md Ayyub of Sungai Tali Primary School came in second place.

Adam Chung of St Andrew’s School took the Under-10 title with schoolmate Adrian Liaw took second place.

St John’s School was awarded first place for best school while Sayyidina Ali Secondary School, Kuala Belait was placed second.

A total of 79 participants participated in the competition from 17 schools. The schools were Sengkurong Sixth Form Centre; Tutong Sixth Form Centre; Sultan Muhammad Jamalul Alam Secondary School; Sayyidina Abu Bakar Secondary School; Sayyidina Hasan Secondary School; Katok Secondary School; Muda Hashim Secondary School; Katok Primary School; PGGMB School Sungai Akar; St Andrew’s School; Seri Mulia Sarjana School; Seri Mulia Sarjana International School; Chung Hua Middle School; St John’s School; St George’s School and Sungai Tali Primary School.

The organiser said, “We are happy with the response from the students, teachers and parents. The number of participants is

increasing compared to last year’s National Youth Under-20. The tournament provides an exposure to students who want to test their strength against other players.”

The competition was organised by the Brunei-Muara Chess Champion Executive Committee in collaboration with the Brunei Chess Federation and Department of Co-Curriculum Education.

BCF Vice President Pengiran Abdul Rahman bin Pengiran Lela Wijaya Pengiran Haji Yussof, who is also Co-Chairman of the Organising Committee was the guest of honour.
