AWANGKU Rafi Dasuki bin Pengiran Mohammad Aminnor Rashid of Yayasan Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah (YSHHB) Secondary School emerged champion in the finals of the 8th Private Secondary Schools’ English Language Oratory Competition 2019 yesterday.

Awangku Rafi Dasuki, who just turned 13 last week, outscored the other seven finalists with his topic ‘Youtubers Are Today’s Influencers’. The teenager impressed the judges with a compelling presentation during the competition held at the multipurpose hall of YSHHB Secondary School.

He lifted the challenge trophy donated by Minister of Home Affairs Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Kerna Dato Seri Setia (Dr) Haji Awang Abu Bakar bin Haji Apong who was then the chairman of Board of Directors of YSHHB during the first Private Secondary School’s English Language Oratory Competition in 2008.

“I can’t believe I won, it’s really a big surprise. I didn’t expect this at all,” Awangku Rafi Dasuki said in an interview. “From the beginning when we first knew about the topic, we started preparing for the competition and in the last three weeks, we really worked hard to be ready.”

He said that he will deposit his BND300 prize money into his savings and also share the cash with his coaches.

Second place went to Matthew Abel Robles Filio from Seri Mulia Sarjana Secondary School with his topic ‘We Should Speak Less, Do More’, while third place was taken by Flora Ngu Jia Ying from Chung Hwa Middle School with her topic ‘A Life of Convenience is our Generation’s Downfall’.

The guest of honour and honorary member of YSHHB Secondary School’s Board of Governors Pengiran Datin Paduka Hajah Hairani binti Pengiran Maharaja Lela Pengiran Muda Abdul Kahar presented the prizes to the winners.
